Jill Beckingham, wife of Gov. Peter Beckingham, will step off on her third and final fund-raising hike across the TCI’s six Family Islands on Friday, Sept. 23.
The annual Footsteps4Good charity walk raised tens of thousands of dollars for local causes in 2014 and 2015. Beckingham will cover a total of 100 kilometers in this month’s event, with more than 1,000 islanders expected to join her along the route.
“This will be my last Footsteps4Good in TCI, so I hope that many people will come and join me this year so that we can raise as much money as possible to help local organisations and schools,” Beckingham said.
The first leg begins with the governor’s wife walking alongside the children of Grand Turk on Sept. 23, followed by a walk/run from the Grand Turk Gazebo to the Cruise Centre on Saturday, Sept. 24. Departing Grand Turk, the event moves on to Salt Cay on Sunday, Sept. 25, South Caicos on Monday, Sept. 26, Middle Caicos on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and North Caicos on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
This year’s tour concludes with three walks on Providenciales, scheduled for Sept. 29, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1: An end-to-end island trek beginning at Amanyara on Thursday the 29th, a Youth Day walk with students on Friday the 30th, and a 10k run or walk from IGA to Blue Haven on Saturday the first.
Advance registration for the event on Grand Turk will be at the Governor’s Office from Sept. 19-23. Provo pre-registration will be on Sept. 17 and Sept. 23 at the IGA Gourmet, Smart and Quality. Participants may also register on the day of the event. District Commissioners will be registering participants on other islands.
Walkers donate $20 to participate, and get to select the charitable organization or school they wish to benefit. All walkers receive a free T-shirt, donated by Tropical Shipping.
Though this will be the final Footsteps4Good of Beckingham’s tenure, the governor’s wife said she is delight that Waterloo Holdings has agreed to take on the event for 2017.
“I hope that in the future I will be able to come back and once again walk across these islands, which have been a wonderful home over the past three years,” she said.
